Sanctuary —

Sanctuary — A Celebration of Life —
My practice explores the relationship between movement, memory, and encounter, while seeking to give form to the invisible presence that resides within life.
In Japan, nature has long been understood as a realm inhabited by countless deities—within mountains, seas, trees, stones, wind, and light. This sensibility, reflected in ancient texts such as the Kojiki and Nihon Shoki, is not merely a remnant of the past. It continues to live in contemporary Japanese culture as a “living tradition,” expressed through an attentiveness to the changing seasons, the custom of gathering beneath cherry blossoms, and a deep-rooted sense of coexistence with nature.
At the foundation of my work is this way of perceiving nature—not simply as landscape or object, but as something that carries memory, life, and unseen presences.
I travel to places I feel called to visit, and begin each work by drawing directly on site, without preliminary sketches. These lines are not intended merely to reproduce the visible landscape. They record the passage of time, the atmosphere, the light, traces of history, the lives present there, and the sensations received through my own body and mind.
After returning to the studio, I build upon these on-site drawings with watercolor, ink, gold, and the recurring image of the butterfly.
In my work, the butterfly is not simply a symbol of beauty or transformation. It is a presence that moves between place and place, past and present, life and life, reality and memory, carrying lost time and human emotion across these thresholds.
Gold is not used merely as ornament. It functions as a field of light in which invisible presences and dormant memories of a place can emerge. Through the layering of actual landscapes with different times and states of being, another world gradually comes into view.
What I seek to depict is not the visible landscape itself.
I am drawn instead to the essence of life beneath it, to the memories accumulated within a place, and to a world in which different forms of existence resonate with one another and coexist. This is what I call a “Sanctuary”: a place where the beauty and dignity of life are affirmed, and where love and peace can reside.
Through my ongoing series CALLING, I continue to explore how personal experience and the memory of place overlap; how encounters remain within us; and how what has been lost may reappear through movement, image, and light.
Just as I was once saved by art, I hope that those who encounter my work may rediscover within themselves the will to live and the capacity to dream.
Beyond boundaries of nation, culture, generation, and social position, I hope to convey a quiet reverence for life. Through art, I seek to become a bridge between people and people, place and memory, and the world and the human heart.
For me, making art is both a celebration of life and a prayer—an act of carrying its dignity forward into the future.
